Happy birthday, Nathaniel Dourif Friedman. It’s your special Nat day.

So we ate cake, played putt-putt, and lounged around at the cave. A good time was had by all. The rest of my day neither interests nor concerns you, so we will both dispense with these prior notions of false excitement and glamour.

I’m not sure what just happened, but I think I just agreed to go to Denver again. I need to hire a new assistant immediately.

We released Lustre Lite 0.5.3 today. Technically it’s an “alpha”, but it’s really not for the squeamish or easily deterred among you.

The sun is up, and it’s official: it’s a beautiful morning in Boston.

I needed to use the whole dev cluster, and that’s easiest when I work at night, since I don’t have to worry about rebooting the nodes out from under other Livermore people. My sleep schedule is going to be so fucked until the rest of our dedicated test cluster arrives, hopefully next week.

I finally started to sift through the photos that I’ve taken in the last few weeks, including my trip to Ohio. I didn’t get very far before I remembered that I had work to do, but I did find these shots of our cottage.

Seriously, there’s hay in my pants.

HP finally announced our contract with DOE. Not that I want to cast any shadows on this clearly well-crafted press release, but I feel compelled to point out that, of the 41,000 lines of code that currently comprise Lustre, HP has contributed exactly zero.

I don’t neglect this page for almost two weeks at a time on purpose, just so you’re aware.

I’m working a lot, and trying generally to stave off burnout. I love my job, I really do, but sometimes the pressure of delivering incredibly complex software, based on a few largely-untested-in-the-real-world innovations, on a completely insane, impossible timeline, to demanding customers who will lock you in prison and throw away the key if you slip just overwhelms me. I’m just kidding about prison. But they are demanding.

Mike made a ha-ha funny joke about my abs, but it’s only coincidence that I’m going to start climbing tomorrow after weeks of neglect. I’ve wanted to climb three times a week, but I was so spoiled by the nearby gyms of south Jersey and the even more nearby real mountains in Canmore that I didn’t notice the Quincy Quarries. They appear to be a 30-45 minute subway/bus ride away, which is safely within my range of tolerance for a good climb. Here’s hoping.

I just started reading “Salt”, which has been sitting on my night stand since Mike got me started on the unfinished Song of Ice and Fire series. I’m enjoying it, which is no surprise given my experience with “Cod”.

I flew to Denver and was awarded the privilege of dinner and drinks with Chris.

It is much nicer–by which I mean cooler–than my visit a month ago. I don’t sweat through my shirt during the time that it takes to walk from the car to the hotel, for example.

I’m somewhere over some relatively-uninteresting corn-growing state, wondering if my voice will return today. I spoke, taught, and generally answered questions for two days, which no doubt seemed like a good idea at the time. I will sip my juice quietly.

This little teaching jaunt was useful, probably, but it did keep me from doing any useful work for the last 4 days. I’ll update some documentation once I finish this update, but the odds of getting my head into a good bug fixing space are slim.

My stress level is high. Maybe seven out of a possible ten.

I was going to help Miguel move, but as it turns out he panicked earlier this week and hired professionals. He seems to think that he inconvenienced me by having me clear my Saturday to help him move, but I don’t think he’s accounted for the sheer relief that washed over me when I learned of the professionals.

Instead, we had a leisurely brunch at Trident and I checked out his new apartment. I have only four things to say about this:

  1. It is on Newbury Street
  2. It is on the third floor
  3. It has a Newbury-facing balcony
  4. Universities have resumed classes

All in favour of adjourning to the balcony?
