I flew to Montréal, eventually, once the weather cleared up. Shaver and Shona had a duck salad, fiddleheads (cooked in the duck fat, natch), and a martini waiting on the dinner table when I arrived. They are so, so good to me. Unreasonably good, to be honest.

Shona, Chris, and I drove from Montréal to Boston. It was a bit long, and pretty hot in the car, but we survived relatively unscathed.

The three of us, plus Nat, Jacob, and Joe went to Artu for Joe’s birthday. It was a happy cinco de mayo. We saw Spider Man (again). I still can’t decide if some of the dialogue is self-mocking or typical Hollywood prattle.

I found an apartment in Brookline. It’s nice. I didn’t take any pictures. I’m not really sure why.

Joe and I ate good Indian food for dinner, if not as good as Shona’s. I did some work then Jacob and I watched Run Lola Run. It was good. Yesterday, Joe and I watched startup.com. It was eerily reminiscent of 2000. Go watch it.

I took the sweet, sweet Acela Express back from Boston, although I wanted to stay for the weekend and the Starbucks shenanigans. At least I fixed some DLM bugs on the train. Then I watched Man on the Moon. It was pretty good.

This article made me really mad, and apparently I set shaver off too. I want to write a letter, but I know it won’t do any good.

I was on the train during the triumphant victory, but that makes it no less real or triumphant.

This web diary thing is getting a little old. It distracts me from my private diary just enough to keep it from being truly cathartic. And let’s be honest: if this isn’t for my benefit, then who exactly is winning here?

In a remarkably shaver-like effort to take a preemptive strike at the no-degree-sour-grapes people, I should point out that if I hadn’t met Peter or the two friends that I (sort-of) keep in contact with at CMU, I would have regarded my year there as a complete, total, US$20,000 waste. I will not waste any more words on this subject unless baited from a distance.

Zach is so smart. He showed

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_ecn

to me. It fixed all of my network problems. For their next trick, someone can explain to me why a TCP option that causes silent packet loss to much of the internet is enabled by default.

I bought a baseball glove today, having given up on finding my really excellent glove from high school. I’d forgotten how much fun tossing a baseball around is–until the other day, when Joe and I exercised our rights as grownups by playing catch in the apartment.

My life hasn’t been very interesting lately. I’m moving soon. I’m selling my car. Lustre work is going well. Further updates as events warrant.

(Go Leafs go!)

Peter arrived and we got a ton of work done. Also, he brought me a grigri as a very nice gift.

It’s weird to be in the hometown paper.

Flying on Memorial Day is not as bad as I expected. The flight attendant spilled red wine on me–twice–but she gave me a bottle of wine to make up for it.

It’s so good to see Chris and Patrice again!

Welcome to California. It’s stupid here. I talked the entire day, so my throat hurts now.

Toronto was eliminated in a fairly typical heartbreaker, after tying the game with 14 seconds remaining. So sad.

Chris and I ate excellent sushi at the Metreon, then we broke down and saw Episode 2. It was so much better than Episode 1 that I don’t even feel like two hours of my life have been stolen forever.

Chris drove me to the airport and I flew home, this time without any wine incidents. I only saw Patrice for about two hours during my trip, which makes me sad. Next time I’ll stay longer, and spend fewer hours in meetings.

I have a lot of work to do, and a lot of errands to run before I move on Friday, but I suspect that I’ll spend most of tomorrow horsing around with Ric anyways. I need a day of goofing off, and I won’t let little things like “responsibility” or “immediate, crushing urgency” get in the way.

I had a nice final day in New Jersey, and then to make it even better blizzard arrived on the train! He was in New York anyways, so he thought he’d experience Philadelphia, help me move, and hitch a ride to Boston.

Sounds great to me, of course, because it’s an excuse to eat at Buddakan one more time. I think Chris is a believer now too.

I was hoping to make at least a tiny dent in the large amount of ice cream in my freezer. We had the best cheesecake on Earth instead, though. sigh.

The movers arrived bright and early. Too early, in fact, a half hour earlier than they were supposed to, so I hadn’t even showered yet. sigh.

Despite arriving early, they didn’t finish packing until a good three hours later than promised. All things considered, though, it was relatively painless. Chris and I packed the car, took a very frightened Simon, and drove to Boston. We stopped just outside Hartford to eat sushi at a place about a half hour off the highway that Chris remembered. Good call.
